Hiking Klein Matterhorn To Zermatt, Switzerland
Zermatt, Switzerland is the base town for viewing the famous Matterhorn. The famous view is from the Gornergrat which will be featured in a future post. The Klein Matterhorn or small Matterhorn actually is at a higher elevation than the Gornergrat but the view is of the backside of the Matterhorn.
Our plan was to hike down from Trockner Steg, the first cable car stop down from Klein Matterhorn but, since the higher elevation trail was closed due to snow, we took the cable car down to the next cable car stop, Furi.
From the Alpine town of Furi, we started our downhill trek. There were beautiful wildflowers and scenery, including snow capped mountains. We hiked through scenic open meadows and forests.
After a refreshing, well earned rest on a trail bench, we continued to the very small village of Zmutt. The trail goes through the center of the village. There are no roads and only very few homes, a restaurant, and a chapel. They cater to hikers passing through on the trail.
The trail varied from paved, gravel, dirt, and stone terrain. Some trails were very narrow and steep.
Slate covered barns in the meadows were very picturesque and the ringing of the cowbells on cattle made this a peaceful hike. Eventually we saw signs of civilization as we neared Zermatt.
We loved hearing the cowbells on all of the cows along the trail.
After a lovely hike, with perfect weather, we finally reached Zermatt in time to find some wonderful Swiss Cuisine which will be be featured in a future post.
Keep traveling! And posting!
